Step aside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, because the 2014 Fifa World Cup is set to have some new stars...the puffins of Coquet Island.

To celebrate the tournament, starting tonight, staff at the RSPB reserve are tempting the birds into a game of football, laying out a mini pitch – with ball – on the jetty.

Kick-off has been delayed, though, as the creatures have not yet landed pitch-side.

The puffins’ punditry skills will also be put to the test, to see if they can predict the winners of each knock-out-stage game.

Flags from the two nations competing in each match will be flown on the jetty and the winner is set to be determined by which country gets the most puffin attention.
