THE wildlife of Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve will be going under the microscope when a crack team of experts head for Holy Island to take part in BioBlitz 2009.

A BioBlitz is a race against time to count as many species of plant and animal as possible on a site in a 24-hour period.

A team of wildlife specialists from across the North East has been assembled to form the BioBlitz team and they are aiming to identify and record anything that flowers, flies, flaps, slithers or swims on Holy Island from 1pm on Friday, June 12 until 1pm the following day.

"It's a rare opportunity to bring together a team of specialists with a variety of expert knowledge to get a unique snapshot of the wildlife of a particular area," said BioBlitz organiser Elaine Jaggs, from the Northumberland Biodiversity Partnership.

"Recording wildlife is vitally important to our understanding of the natural world and all the information we collect during BioBlitz will increase our knowledge of Lindisfarne and act as a benchmark for the future."

Anyone visiting Holy Island during BioBlitz is invited to join in and can get involved with the recording of wildlife by taking part in moth recording, minibeast hunts, rock pooling, bird surveys, and other wildlife-related activities.

Experts will be on hand along the nature trail to help visitors experience what nature has to offer.

The BioBlitz base camp in the Chare Ends car park on Holy Island will be open to the public during the event and visitors are welcome to drop in for the latest updates, submit their own records or chat to the team. Experts will be on hand to help identify photos of wildlife brought in on camera phones or digital cameras.

Andrew Craggs, Natural England's Lindisfarne NNR reserve manager, said: "With its unique location and the range of important wildlife habitats, Lindisfarne is home to a variety of fascinating wildlife.

"It's going to be amazing to have so many experts here to investigate the wildlife and who knows what we'll discover."

Youngsters from Alnwick South First School will be joining the BioBlitz team.
