A drink-driver started to fall asleep at the wheel and caused an accident on the A1 Belford bypass, magistrates in Berwick heard last week.
Craig Fletcher, 32, was on his way to Seahouses to see his girlfriend when the accident happened at 11pm on June 17.
The court was told he scraped the side of another vehicle and when officers arrived at the scene he failed a roadside breath test. A sample of breath taken for analysis following his arrest showed he had 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35mg.
Fletcher, from Highcliffe, Spittal, pleaded guilty to a charge of drink-driving. In mitigation, it was claimed he had drunk four pints of Guinness before making ‘the silliest mistake of his life’.
Magistrates banned him for 17 months and ordered that he pay fines and costs totalling £280.
