Age-range changes for special schools

The age range of pupils at special schools in Northumberland looks set to change from September this year, following a consultation.

At Monday’s meeting of the county council’s executive, members agreed to publish statutory notices for the changes for the county’s eight special schools.

As of September 2013, children will start at schools such as Alnwick’s Barndale House School and Berwick’s The Grove School at the age of two instead of three.

It follows a full review of special educational needs (SEN) undertaken in the county because of concerns associated with poor outcomes being achieved by pupils with SEN, the high costs incurred and the relatively high number of complex and vulnerable pupils being required to travel great distances to have their needs addressed.

The consultation showed that the majority who replied were in favour of the age-range changes.
