Advice to farmers on putting a spring in stock’s step

Help with herd and flock health planning will be covered at a farm meeting tonight.
Alnorthumbria Veterinary Group is holding the meeting at Longframlington Village Hall at 7.30pm.
It will look at the latest techniques for controlling and reducing the treatment costs of common diseases such as sheep scab and calf scour.
Guest speakers include Dr Alasdair Nisbet, senior scientiest from the world-famous Moredun Institute, renowned for its research into infectious diseases in farmed animals, and vets John Macfarlane and Stuart Morris.
Dr Nisbet will present the latest techniques for sheep scab control and diagnosis, which can be problematic.
Stuart will discuss the best ways to prevent calf scour and to treat affected cattle, while John will give an update on the Schmallenberg virus.
Joe Henry, a director at Alnorthumbria, said: “We are delighted that Alasdair can join us as his work is at the forefront of disease control. This will be a unique chance to find out more about their newly-developed diagnostic blood test.
“Hopefully by allowing farmers to screen just a proportion of sheep, they may be able to reduce drug costs and eliminate the threat of anthelmintic resistance build-up, which is the single biggest animal health threat to future sheep farming profitability.”
