The A697 is likely to remain closed in both directions between New Moor House crossroads and the Bridge of Aln for the rest of today after a lorry carrying radioactive waste overturned yesterday.
Northumbria Police has said that the estimated time of recovery of the vehicle is 8pm this evening.
But it is not know what time the road will re-open once the lorry has been removed.
Diversions remain in place along the B6341 Alnwick Moor Road and the road which leads to Lemington Bank from Bridge of Aln.
The lorry overturned at around 3.30pm yesterday.
It was carrying almost 70 drums of radioactive waste, but after test by specialists this was found to a pose a very low level of potential radioactivity, the risk from the material is very low.
