The Duchess of Northumberland was the guest of honour at a tea party held by older people’s housing charity Abbeyfield to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

Chatting with Abbeyfield residents at the charity’s Alnwick home, the Duchess enjoyed a cup of tea and was presented with her own trench cake, made from an authentic First World War recipe.

Alnwick Abbeyfield resident Nan Wharrier, 88, said: “It was a wonderful day and the atmosphere very pleasant indeed. It was good to have a catch-up and a chat with people and see some new faces too. The Duchess was lovely and very, very kind. It was a real treat to meet her.”

Residents prepared for the big day by making patriotic floral table decorations and a First World War display complete with items loaned by members of the community including photographs and memorabilia including a contemporary artillery shell and fuse, a gramophone and an early 20th century jigsaw puzzle.
