The subpostmaster in Alnwick has received a special delivery
to help him on his regular rounds of rural north Northumberland.
The brand-new mobile van is one of a whole new fleet being rolled out across the UK to serve more than 250 locations, including the Alnwick vehicle’s regular stops at Doddington, Bamburgh, North Charlton, Lowick, Milfield, Ancroft and Beadnell.
Alnwick subpostmaster Allan Newton has taken delivery of one of these new Mercedes Sprinter vans, kitted out to provide a walk-in post office on wheels, with the added facility of an accessibility lift.
The new vans are replacing the current fleet of vans, which have travelled around three million miles over the past six years.
The mobile branches offer all of the services that their core branches provide to more isolated areas, including postage of letters and parcels and personal banking such as cash withdrawals, savings and insurance.
Kevin Gilliland, Post Office network director, said: “We are very pleased to see this new mobile post office take to the road to provide vital services for customers around Alnwick. We are investing in services across our network to make it easier for customers, whether that means they are served via one of our new vehicles in more isolated areas or at a modernised high-street branch.”
