A place for contemplation in school’s special garden

A north Northumberland first school welcomed the Bishop of Newcastle last week to open and bless its new commemorative garden.
Bishop Martin Wharton was at Warkworth CofE Aided First School on Friday for the unveiling of the Forever Friendly Garden, in memory of the late Canon Janet Brearley, who passed away last year.
The creation of the garden has involved pupils, teachers, governors, members of the community and local businesses and at the service they were all thanked for their support by both headteacher Jacqui Carrick and Bishop Wharton.
Parents and other members of the community gathered for a blessing from Bishop Wharton as he unveiled a plaque on the wooden cross in the centre of the garden.
Several of the pupils read out some of their memories of Canon Brearley before the whole school sang the ‘Warkworth speciality’ Snowdrops Song. One of the pupils had said the Canon Brearley loved those particular flowers.
The plaque on the cross in the garden reads: ‘Forever Friendly Garden
‘Dedicated to the peace and tranquility of present and future generations of children at Warkworth Church of England (Aided) First School
‘Named by the children in summer 2012 in memory of the Reverend Canon Janet Brearley RIP, Vicar, Governor and Friend.
“Opened 1st March 2013 by the Rt Rev’d Martin Wharton Bishop of Newcastle.’
The entire school had an input into naming the garden and several pupils, past and present, helped with the design and execution. There will eventually be three seats enabling children to have a quiet place for reflection among the flowers and trees as they change through the seasons.
Everybody at the school was extremely grateful to parents, members of the community and local businesses, who raised money and donated time and materials to bring the garden project to fruition.
