A long history of bus bother

A rough design for the mural in Wooler bus station.

Wooler is to get a colourful mural, painted by some of the village’s youngsters, as part of a return to the original bus shelter.

For several months, the parish council has been working on reinstating the original shelter at the bus station, following complaints and damage to the newer stand-alone shelter.

And councillors felt that a good way to brighten up the shelter would be to get some of the local teenagers to get involved with designing an artwork for the interior.

A group of those who attend the Wooler Drop-in Centre brainstormed some ideas for the mural, which was then developed by John Craggs, an artist from Rothbury.

At Monday’s meeting of the parish council, some of the rough ideas for the work were shown, with both councillors and the teens favouring the design pictured above, featuring a walker, a runner, a cyclist and a climber. However, the sheep is to be removed from the design.

The cost for the work is going to be £270, which the council felt was very reasonable, while some of the youths from the drop-in centre will be painting the work with John.

All of the councillors were complimentary about the design with Coun Anthony Murray describing it as ‘absolutely superb’.
