7.30AM UPDATE: Radioactive waste ‘has not leaked’ in A697 accident

Specialists have confirmed that the low-level radioactive waste being carried on a lorry which overturned yesterday on the A697 has not leaked.

Early this morning police said an assessment of the vehicle and the drums has shown the naturally-occurring radioactive waste has not leaked or spilled into the surrounding area.

The lorry carrying more than 60 drums of waste overturned on the A697 near Thrunton early yesterday evening and the road was closed from New Moor House crossroads to the Bridge of Aln.

It was still closed early this morning with diversions in place.
