A north Northumberland man has completed his marathon Olympic-themed fund-raising cycle ride.

Neil Mundy, a non-executive director at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, set himself the challenge of cycling 2,012km (1,250 miles) before the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

He finished his challenge at the Trust’s Wansbeck General Hospital on Friday.

He expects to raise £1,000 for the Trust’s Bright charity, which helps to enhance the quality of care in hospitals and in the community in Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Neil has completed the challenge over the last couple of months by cycling through the north Northumberland countryside and in Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre in Alnwick in bad weather.

On average, Neil, who is also chairman of Ellingham Parish Council, chairman of Northumberland Theatre Company and a trustee of Age UK Northumberland, has been cycling around 200km (124 miles) per week.

Neil said: “I’m so pleased to have completed the challenge and it was great to have so much support when I finished at Wansbeck General Hospital.

“As 2012 is such a very special year with the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympic Games I wanted to do something which was fitting.

“This has certainly been a challenge however I feel an enormous sense of achievement now that it’s finished.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me along the way – their encouragement has helped be greatly.

“The money I’ve managed to raise will help Bright to continue to provide the little extras that make a huge difference to people using our services whether that is in hospital or in the community.”
