Lesbury WI, November meeting

President Susan Wood welcomed 41 members to Lesbury WI’s meeting on a very windy evening on November 11, and we started with a minute’s silence as it was Remembrance Day.

The minutes of the last meeting were read, approved and signed by the president before the rest of the usual business was dealt with, and the treasurer reminded us that annual subscriptions of £36 will be due in January.

Our catering manager Audrey reminded us to fill in the supper rota for next year, and arrangements were made for our next meeting in December which will be our Christmas party, with entertainment provided by Lion Heart Harmony.

Our post-Christmas lunch will be at The Northumberland Arms, Felton, on January 20, and members were asked to sign up if they wish to go.

The main event of the evening was a flower arranging demonstration by our own members, Kathleen Turnbull and Elaine Foreman.

They kept producing leaves, flowers and other adornments from an assortment of bags and boxes like magicians producing rabbits from a hat!

Kathleen made up traditional arrangements whilst Elaine produced a selection of more modern themes. It was very interesting watching the development of each arrangement come to fruition, and the usual comedy act between the two kept us all amused as they worked side by side.

The finished displays were beautiful and Susan thanked the pair for yet another super demonstration.

After supper, Kathleen and Elaine judged the competition – a flower arrangement with a candle – with Maureen Inglis in first place, Jan McMahon in second and Veronica Merryweather in third.

The birthday girl for the month was Thelma Anderson, and cards were given to two members who have ‘big’ birthdays coming up before our next meeting.

We had a bumper raffle, with the flower arrangements all given as raffle prizes in addition to the normal prizes – a total of 12 altogether.

It will be interesting to know how people got their arrangements home safely in the gale that was blowing as we left the hall after another very enjoyable evening.
