‘Leave the politics out of police panel’

Northumberland’s representatives on Northumbria’s police and crime panel have advised the new police and crime commissioner that political divisions should not be used as an excuse not to listen to their concerns and priorities.

The advice from Bobby Nixon and Lesley Rickerby, the Liberal Democrats representing Northumberland County Council, comes as Vera Baird prepares to meet the panel for the first time inGateshead today.

Couns Nixon and Rickerby are the only two Liberal Democrats on the panel, which will advise Ms Baird as she gets to grips with her new role.

CounNixon said: “I am pleased to be representing Northumberland County Council on this panel.

“Northumberland is a predominantly rural county and it’s important that the needs and wishes of our rural communities are taken into account when policing priorities are being set.”
