Learning lessons for gritting in winter

Gritting the roads during the winter was successfully carried out by the county council, although there are areas for improvement, according to a report this week.

It explains that the monitoring of weather conditions and communication, particularly via social media, worked well this winter.

The report, to the economic scrutiny committee, reads: “The number of compliments received during the recent winter period increased significantly and this is most definitely as a direct result of the way we have been able to communicate more effectively with the public as well as the way we have responded operationally during severe weather situations.”

But there were issues to be sorted related to salt stocks running low and the salt suppliers, while the council will look to improve working relationships with town and parish councils to cover residential areas.
