Jess agrees to bear a torch in aid of charity

A TORCHBEARER who will be doing her bit with the Olympic flame later this year is to start off another event in aid of a local charity.

Jess Morrison was featured in last week’s Northumberland Gazette as being part of the Torch relay in Tynemouth on June 15.

The story above the 15-year-old Duchess’s High School pupil’s piece was about a midnight walk in aid of HospiceCare North Northumberland, and after seeing it Jess and her mum, Karen, decided they would take part.

And when they rang up to book their place, Julie Mawer, fund-raiser at the hospice, asked Jess to start the walk - which she said she would be honoured to do.

Jess said: “Mum did it last time and I just said why don’t we do it to raise money for the hospice. Then when mum rang up and explained they asked me to start it.

“I feel quite honoured, I was really surprised. There are loads of people who they could have asked instead of me.

“I’m looking forward to it. The whole Festival of Alnwick week should be really good for the town and hopefully it will draw lots of people in.”

Jess and her mum will be asking for sponsorship for the event, and hope to raise a good sum for the charity.
