Athletics star Laura Weightman has booked a dream spot at this year’s Olympics, but insists she is not there to make up the numbers.
The Lesbury runner, who turns 21 this weekend, qualified for the British team for London 2012 after winning the 1500m final at the UK Trials on Sunday.
And she admits that she can’t wait to battle it out on the biggest stage of them all.
“I just want to get out there and do myself proud and do the best I can,” she said. “I would love to make the final.”
Laura, who is coached by middle-distance legend Steve Cram, had already run an Olympic A qualifying time going into the trials, which meant she knew a top-two finish would guarantee a place at the London Games this summer.
Laura ran a fantastic race on Sunday, breaking away from the rest of the pack as the bell rang to signal the final lap. She put more and more distance between herself and the trailing field to win the race in a time of 4mins 18.83 secs.
“I’m going to the Olympics. I can’t believe it,” said an emotional Laura afterwards.
Now her focus turns to the Games and she will join the rest of the Team GB athletes at their camp in Portugal at the end of July, before the 1500m kicks off on August 6.
