Four Housing Group has teamed up with New College Durham and debt management charity StepChange to bring its tenants a new money management and advice scheme.
The Community Benefit Buddies (CBBs) scheme will see tenants from Three Rivers Housing and Berwick Borough Housing undertake a three-day course, provided by New College Durham, on how to manage money effectively.
Upon successful completion of the course, tenants will act as voluntary advisors for other members of the community who may be worried by the proposed changes to the welfare benefit system.
They will offer advice on basic budgeting skills, credit unions, illegal money lending, energy advice, welfare benefits and signposting to debt advice.
To date, 16 people have signed up to become a CBB and there is now a waiting list for the next intake.
