Groundwork North East, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, is looking for volunteers to play their part in an exciting new project.
The Story of the North East’s Lumber Jills is a project which arose from Groundwork’s involvement at Chopwell Wood in Gateshead and with the Forestry Commission.
In 2011, the Friends were contacted by the son of a Lumber Jill who it was believed worked for the Women’s Timber Corp during the Second World War at the wood and this led to a national search for more women.
Now with a number of stories coming forward, including in Northumberland, Groundwork is looking for volunteers to help conduct interviews with Lumber Jills and their families and document their stories for a website.
