Healthcare and council leaders in Northumberland will meet in public tomorrow to discuss the next steps for a brand new hospital in Berwick.

A joint public board meeting will be held at Berwick Rangers Football Club to agree a £25million loan from Northumberland County Council to Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, which will start the process of developing a new state-of-the-art hospital on the site of the existing Berwick Infirmary.

In a unique arrangement, the proposed council loan will be made possible thanks to the borrowing powers which are available to local authorities, ensuring the best possible value for money for the NHS and for taxpayers.

This partnership is a result of the very strong relationships that have existed between the council and Northumbria Healthcare for many years, resulting in some of the best examples of integrated health and social care in England.

Members of the public are invited to an information event being held at the football club from 1.30pm to 3pm to find out more about the services provided in Berwick Infirmary and the expected timelines for the new hospital build.

Northumbria Healthcare announced at the end of 2013 its intention to rebuild Berwick Infirmary on the existing town-centre site after listening to the views of local people. Since then, the Trust has been working behind the scenes and with partners to move plans forward.
