Parish councillors have warned that plans to overhaul a village’s skate park have been put in jeopardy by wanton vandalism and now an attack on the village hall.

Volunteers behind the million-pound renovation of Shilbottle’s community facilities were dismayed to discover the door to the hall’s heating plant room had been smashed in between Sunday afternoon and Tuesday morning.

Nothing was stolen, but a fire-extinguisher was set off. Hall committee chairman Peter Brown said the damage had been estimated at £3,000.

Parish councillor Elisabeth Haddow, who was a driving force in the planning and fund-raising effort to replace the former Miners’ Welfare Hall, said: “People have worked hard for 10 years to get the hall and the play areas up and running, but then it’s treated like this.

“There are fires being started and seats ripped up.”
