A DETERMINED teenager has used his head in a quirky bid to raise funds for an overseas trip, by shaving off all his hair.

Andy Hunt, of the Alnwick-based Mid-Northumberland Explorer Scouts, decided to hack back his long locks as part of a huge fund-raising effort for an expedition to Africa to join a building project next summer.

The 17-year-old, as well as five other members from the group – Beth and Jack Wyld, Charlotte Robertson, Polly Smith and Joe Roper – are trying to raise a total of £18,000 to fund the venture. They hope to help construct a learning centre and ancillary buildings for people in Maun, in Botswana.

Close to £12,000 has already been collected for the cause, with a combination of donations and other money-making activities, and Andy tried to increase the team’s tally by shaving his head.

The sponsored trim was held at Alnwick’s Duchess’s Community High School and he has raised more than half of his £500 target.
