Green-fingered youngsters have been growing their beautiful blooms across north Northumberland for a chance to be crowned the Gazette’s Sunflower Champion 2013.

A host of pictures has been sent in of children with their tall flowers grown in parents’, grandparents’ and family gardens.

Pictured, Owen Butroid, six, helped his grandparents to grow his blooms at their Victoria Crescent home while Yeverin Lobb, seven, grew a monster bloom at home in Main Street, Felton. And anyone else wanting to enter their sunflower to the compeition has until today to do so. Once all the entries have been received, the Gazette’s gardening correspondent, Tom Pattinson, will visit the five tallest blooms to measure them. The top three will then win prizes which will be presented to the youngsters at the annual Alnwick in Bloom presentation evening at Alnwick Garden next month.

To be in with a chance, email your pictures to or post them to Sunflower Competition, 32 Bondgate Without, Alnwick, Northumberland NE66 1PN.
