Gritting still scaled down

GRITTING teams are continuing to use an interim policy to conserve salt supplies.

The Gazette revealed before Christmas that a temporary procedure was being used by Northumberland County Council to grit roads in the county because of low supplies. This week, the council confirmed that same policy is still in place, prior to a delivery from Peru which is due next week.

All routes are being spread with 10g of salt per square metre and the council is following national guidelines on spreading in very cold conditions when grit is less effective.
