Now is the time to do more about the state of north Northumberland’s streets which seem to be plagued with dog mess.

The piles of poop are multiplying on a weekly basis and it is the dog owners who fail to pick up after their pets that need to take responsibility.

If the county council can fine more people, others might not be so blasé about it.

But we need residents to ‘drop them in it’ so enforcement action can be taken.

It is all well and good moaning about dog poo, but for it to improve we have to report incidents.

Northumberland County Council is not resting on its laurels, it has trained more people who have the authority to issue fixed-penalty notices and it says it will take strong action against those flouting the rules.

But is it enough?

Let’s hope that this publicity and more fines will make people think again and help keep our streets and public areas clean and free from dog poo.

No one wants to stand in it or get it on the wheels of their bike or pram and no one should have to. We need to take action now.
