Footballer Lucy Bronze has recently topped an incredible season by making her full England senior debut and winning the FA Women’s Super League with Liverpool Ladies – the first time in the club’s history.

What an incredible achievement, we are so proud of her.

Lucy is just one local sporting superstar who has gone on to accomplish great things over the last year or so.

Lesbury athlete Laura Weightman, for instance, reached the women’s 1500m final at the London 2012 Olympics.

Then there’s Amble lad Luke James, who currently tops this season’s goals list for League Two club Hartlepool United, while Alnwick’s Jonni Quinn is on the books at Newcastle United.

There are many more gifted sports people in the area; the annual Alnwick and District Sports Awards are a constant reminder of that.

What it shows is, despite sports facilities being fairly limited in this neck of the woods, it is still not stopping our sports people from excelling, through hard work and determination.

It is also thanks to the myriad of coaches, many of whom are volunteers, at clubs in the area.
