They say of London buses that you wait ages for one to arrive, then three come at once.
The same can be said of major planning issues, if last week is anything to go by.
Northumberland County Council’s area planning committee was faced with decisions on application for a Wetherspoon’s pub and stores for Aldi and Majestic Wines in Alnwick.
There has been a general feeling from people who comment on our social networks and in letters to the Gazette that Alnwick has been slow to move with the times and that these developments would be applauded.
There was also a feeling that the bids would be rejected and the town would miss out again.
But, lo and behold, they were all given the thumbs up.
Like the companies involved or not, the areas in question have been vacant for long enough and needed urgent regeneration. And, as our front page today points out, they bring with them much-needed employment at a time when the economy, both locally and nationally, is depressed. Overall, these positive decisions must be welcomed as we hope for a more prosperous future.
