Friends back in contact after 50 years apart

A pair of pen-friends who had lost contact and not spoken in 50 years have been reunited - thanks to the Gazette.

Last month, Ralf Thenior, from Dortmund, came into our office while he was on holiday in the area and said he would love to hear from his former Northumberland pal, Anne.

He came over to Alnwick five decades ago to stay with her and her family at White House Farm, but the pair lost touch after he returned to his native Germany.

However, the two are now speaking again after we published his plea to hear from Anne, along with a black and white photograph of her, in the September 18 edition.

Anne Lawson née Leslie saw the story and contacted Ralf. The pair have exchanged a number of emails.

Married father-of-one Ralf, 68, who is a published writer, said: “The article worked very well as my pen-friend from 50 years ago sent me an email which made my day and I am very happy about that. Thanks to the Northumberland Gazette.”

Anne said that she was surprised when she saw the appeal in the Gazette, but said it has been good to be back in touch.

“Hopefully we will stay in contact,” she said.
