A SERIES of free sports sessions will be available at leisure centres across Northumberland to mark the arrival of the Olympic Torch in the UK.
Taster sessions will be available in a wide range of sports including archery, boccia, diving, judo, synchronised swimming, taekwondo and volleyball.
Northumberland County Council has joined forces with sports centres, clubs and societies to develop the programme called Give it a Go .
They are open to all ages and will run for five weeks.
One session started on Monday, marking the arrival of the Torch in the UK. Another series will be held between June 11 and 17 when the Torch makes its way to Northumberland and again from July 9 to 15 in anticipation of the Olympics. The last session will be held between August 27 and September 2 when the Paralympic Games take place.
Coun Neil Bradbury, executive member responsible for leisure, said the council is striving to ensure Northumberland’s communities gain maximum benefit from the Games.
“The Olympic Games will soon be upon us and this summer will see an enormous focus on sport. Hopefully this will inspire local residents to be more active and take advantage of the fantastic facilities on their doorstep,” he said.
