The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Northumberland coast, from the North Sea at Berwick to St Mary’s Lighthouse at Whitley Bay, as a band of low pressure threatens a tidal surge.
The pressure could create surge conditions which will further increase the spring tide heights.
An approaching weather front and onshore winds are forecast to increase wave height, and the risk of spray and overtopping.
High tide was at 4am and at 4pm today.
A statement on the Agency’s alert says: “We will continue to monitor the situation and update these messages as the situation develops.
“We are currently in a period of spring tides and are expecting to see continued high tides and spray along the coast throughout the rest of the week.”
A flood warning was issued last night for properties on Riverside Road, Garden Terrace and Sawmill Cottage at Alnmouth but that is no longer in force.
