THE way local commercial fishermen working boats of under 10 metres long will have their access to fish managed is likely to be changed dramatically if proposals from Defra are implemented next year.
A consultation from the Government’s fisheries managers is suggesting that the quotas for each inshore and shell fisherman will be fixed according to their past track record of catches.
Fishermen will also be given the opportunity to manage their own quota rather than have it managed for them by the Government.
A roadshow is coming to Amble for fishermen to discuss the proposals with staff from NUFTA and Defra.
It is being held at Fourways2, Dilston Terrace, on Tuesday, from 2pm to 8pm, with a debate at 6pm.
