Take time to prepare your pet's holiday

Between January and June last year 55,733 pet passports were issued to owners who wanted to take their animal friends abroad.

But Vets4Pets says there is much more to consider, such as packing your pet’s essential documentation, getting details of the local vet for where you are staying, checking your pet is microchipped and making sure that vaccinations are up to date.

It is advised that if travelling in a car, putting your pet in a crate is often the safest option, but they will need regular stops to stretch their legs.

If leaving your pet at home in kennels or a cattery, visit the premises first and check it is licensed by the local authority. Check that the pets are housed individually in a warm, secure, clean and dry environment. Also make sure that your pet is vaccinated against kennel cough.

A good kennel will insist on seeing proof of your pet’s vaccinations and ask questions about their diet.
