Don’t give your pet a Bonfire Night fright

Is your pet frightened by fireworks? Alnorthumbria Veterinary Group wants to help pet owners prepare for the most alarming night of the year.

It is offering a free advice evening for pet owners focusing on the needs of animals around fireworks.

With November 5 looming, and fireworks on sale from early October, Alnorthumbria Vets are keen to ensure that pet owners know how to look after their animals around fireworks.

Run by vet Sara Jackson, the free Be Prepared for Fireworks event takes place at Alnorthumbria’s branch at Wagonway Road, Alnwick, on Thursday, September 19 at 7pm.

Sara’s talk is aimed at helping equip animal owners with the knowledge and skills to help alleviate the stress caused by fireworks.

She will discuss how and why the phobia develops in the first place and what treatments, both medical and behavioural, are available.

Sara said: “It may sound early in the year to be discussing fireworks and how to help animals cope, but it’s the perfect time if animals require treatment prior to the fireworks season getting into full swing.

“Some types of medication do not have instant results, therefore, it’s always better to be prepared in advance.

“It’s all about us helping you, as the owner, to help your pet.

“This isn’t just aimed at dogs. The talk will also include advice for caring for your cat and other small pets.

“Even if you can cope with the fireworks season, you may just find out something interesting or pick up a handy tip to take away.”

The evening is free to both clients and non-clients. Refreshments will be available and there will be a question and answer session after the talk.

To register an interest in attending, ring the surgery on 01665 510999 or email wag onway@alnorthumbriavets.co.uk for a downloadable booking form.
