A one-stop shop for farming and garden machinery servicing, spare parts and repairs has just completed a major refurbishment as it expands to meet customer demand.

Northumbrian Garden Machinery, at Hedgeley Services in Powburn, is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of spare parts, from small plant stone cutters and water-trough plumbing materials to welding and fencing materials.

The shop, which is also a John Deere associated dealer, sells new equipment and carries out repairs and servicing in addition to selling parts for DIY jobs. Started in 2005 by former farm manager George Aspin and his wife Sara, Northumbrian Garden Machinery was originally based in the couple’s shed, before moving into the Powburn premises in 2011.

George said: “I worked in farming from the age of 16 but I’d always been keen to set up my own business. When my chainsaw broke and I had to send it away for repairs, I realised there must be a cheaper and better way of doing things – and that’s what led to Northumbrian Garden Machinery.

“For us, customer service is the key thing. We really do bend over backwards and have had a 100 per cent rating from our clients since we opened in 2005. If we don’t have a part in stock, we will find it for you and we collect and deliver machinery for repairs and service.”

The shop is open to the public and is as likely to be servicing a lawnmower as selling farming equipment from hydraulic pipes to shearing machines.

But George’s lifetime of experience in farming and the expertise he has developed over the years means that agricultural equipment is a speciality.

The family farming link is continuing with George and Sara’s four children, who are all also involved in the store.

Tom, 19, works on a farm, while Niamh, 16, Edward, 15, and 13-year-old Tilly have been busy helping with lambing in the last few weeks.

Originally from Lancashire, the family moved to Northumberland in 2001 and set up the company four years later. The first major expansion into commercial premises came three years ago and now the business is heading towards its 10th anniversary with further growth.
