End of the road

COUNCILLORS are drawing a yellow line under decades of piecemeal rules on the county’s roads.

Northumberland’s 5,000 miles of highway have 1,200 traffic regulation orders controlling parking, some dating from the 1950s.

The county council which has taken on the roles of the old county and district councils is now reducing these to a handful of rules encapsulated in two parking orders for each area of Northumberland.

The planning and environment committee approved orders for north Northumberland last week.
