Embleton WI, January meeting

Embleton WI members met in Creighton Hall for their January meeting, looking forward to a new year of interesting events.

They were welcomed by the president, Mrs N Ham before the speaker for the afternoon, Adam Moody, was introduced by Mrs J Little.

Adam runs Moody’s Shop, the village shop in Embleton, which underwent a major redevelopment in 2013.

The shop and the adjoining Post Office which have served the village for many years now exist as a single unit with longer opening hours and more stock that have resulted in increased sales and an improved postal service.

While the building work was in progress a large container was utilised as a makeshift shop supplying essential goods and a mobile Post Office van visited to keep business ticking over for four weeks.

Adam assisted in much of the work and kept a photographic record which led the members through the whole operation leading up to a grand reopening with events for all the customers as a thank-you for their support.

The shop is now being showcased by Londis as an example of the advantages of a refit.

In conclusion, Adam gave some details of Londis events, sales promotions and possible ideas for the future.

The members were agreed that the venture had been a great success for the village, especially in these days of declining stores. A vote of thanks was given by Miss J Littler.

Following tea and biscuits, the members conducted their business meeting.

Votes were collected for the resolution to be put forward at the national AGM.

Forthcoming county and local events were highlighted, including the selection of a team for a quiz evening at Beadnell WI.

Details were finalised for the February meeting when a talk will be given on Hospice Care North Northumberland.

The competition subject was winter, the winners: 1 Mrs N Ham; 2 Mrs J Laidler; 3 Mrs M Hewitson. The raffle winner was Mrs B Thornton.
