FESTIVE WORKSHOP: The president of Embleton WI, Lady Craft, welcomed several visitors to their December meeting where the secretary, Mrs L Harratt, had agreed to demonstrate the preparation of a Christmas table decoration.
A short business meeting covered local and county matters.
Two members had received letters concerning the future of the mobile library in the district, for which the future looks favourable.
A call has been made by the County Executive for members interested in becoming WI advisers.
A list of resolutions for the 2012 AGMhas been published, and members were asked to consider their preferences to reduce these to two for the meeting at the Albert Hall in June.
The treasurer reported on the success of the sales table and reminded members of the new subscription rates for 2012.
Business over, our secretary demonstrated the construction of a table decoration based on seasonal greenery, a candle and other accessories.
The members, after selection of their starting materials, then became very active producing their own artistic decorations with a background of Christmas carols.
Everyone was very pleased with the finished products which all had their own special individuality.
After all the efforts of the afternoon, members and visitors were happy to sit down to an afternoon tea prepared by members.
The winners of the competition for a Christmas tree decoration were: 1st, Mrs N Ham; 2nd, Lady Sutherland and 3rd, Miss J Littler.
Raffle prizes were won by a visitor and Mrs J Littler.
The afternoon came to an end with best wishes for Christmas and the New Year to members and visitors from the president.
Everyone on leaving was full of praise for our secretary, who had left them with one Christmas problem solved.
Two days later, members of the local Institutes travelled to Hexham Abbey for the annual Christmas at the Abbey service. They enjoyed singing carols and also listening to the WI choir and readers.
