A number of north Northumberland residents have questioned the election signage that has gone up beside the A1, particularly given past difficulties for businesses trying to advertise along the trunk road.

A Northumberland County Council spokesman said: “Adverts that are election advertising, once parliament has been dissolved, are excluded from the direct control of the local planning authority.

“However, if a sign is causing an obstruction or safety hazard we would investigate and remove if we felt it was required. We wouldn’t treat political signs any different to any other advertising signs.”
