AN elected leader could be on the cards for Alnwick Town Council, to balance the largely ceremonial role of mayor.
The idea was first raised as part of a debate on the first draft of the council’s new constitution, carried out by a working group of councillors.
Although the majority were in favour of keeping the current arrangement, with the mayor as the single civic head of the council, an indicative vote at the meeting suggested otherwise.
Coun Sara Walton said many councillors who had full-time jobs would find it difficult to carry out the mayoral role because of time constraints during the day.
She said: “Opening up a leadership role to a wider variety of people recognises that everybody has something to contribute.”
Coun Sue Patience said: “We might need someone who is available to take on this kind of role, as well as the ceremonial role.
“I can see that we might need that kind of structure.”
Six councillors to five voted in favour of considering the creation of a leader at a future date.
