Smart students from an Alnwick school were in sum-sational form by winning a major maths challenge.
The Year 5and 6 pupils helped Lindisfarne Middle School take the title of overall winner in Sumdog’s UK National Maths Contest on Thursday, May 8.
The competition was tough with more than 130 schools participating.
The Lindisfarne pupils have been praised for their achievement, which has been described as ‘massive’ by school staff. Rebecca Simpson said: “As the Key Stage 2 maths coordinator, I was absolutely thrilled to hear that we had won the Sumdog national maths competition.
“The award was thoroughly deserved and reflects the children’s persistence and enthusiasm for maths.
“Most of all, it was a wonderful feeling to see the pride on their faces when we told them the news.”
The success in the Sumdog event comes during what has been a busy time at the school.
The newly-formed PTA has organised a family ceilidh, which is taking place at the school tomorrow from 7pm to 9pm.
Lindisfarne’s own ceilidh band, along with the Duchess’s Community High School’s ceilidh band, will be providing the entertainment.
Families and friends of Lindisfarne pupils, along with the families of the high-school students and Year 4 pupils from the local feeder schools have all been invited.
Tickets are available from the school office on 01665 602534.
Over the Easter holidays, refurbishment work took place at the site.
The large foyer area is now equipped with a new reception desk and a secure entry system.
The work was completed by a fleet of electricians, alarm specialists, window and carpet fitters and joiners.
Acting headteacher Stephanie Hall said: “We are keen to welcome all visitors to our school, whether they are parents, governors or other members of our community.
“We think that our new fresh area does just that.”
Meanwhile, Year 6 students from the school had yoga sessions recently to prepare them for the challenge of their important SAT tests.
Stephanie Down, PE coordinator, said that it taught breathing techniques and basic yoga which would help students to relieve stress and improve concentration.
