Drivers warned of town centre road closures

PARTS of Alnwick town centre will be closed to cars when the Queen visits the town.

While no final details have yet been announced, Northumberland County Council has said that the immediate town centre, including Bondgate Within, will be closed for the day.

Parking in the area will also be restricted, as will parking around Alnwick Castle and Alnwick Garden, where a party is being held for carers and volunteers.

There are as yet no plans for a park and ride facility but the Pastures is being opened for car parking and people attending the garden party are being directed to the event via the A1 into the Garden and Pastures car parks. Members of the public will also be encouraged to use The Pastures.

The county council is working with the Duchess of Northumberland to organise the event and has also been working with Alnwick Town Council, whose clerk Bill Batey is writing to schools to ask if they want to take part in the walkabout line-up.

l Carers or volunteers in Northumberland who have not received an invitation to the garden party and would like to attend can ring the helpline 01670 534876.
