Drain cover thefts put lives at risk

ROAD risks were even more perilous in North Broomhill after the theft of 20 drain covers.

The incident took place in Station Road between 5pm on Thursday, October 6 and 8am the following day.

Police believe that due to the number of the triangular covers taken, the thieves must have used a vehicle and taken their haul to a scrap yard.

Officers are urging the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Morpeth Acting Inspector Dave Simpson said: “If anyone is seen removing items from the road or roadside then please call the police straight away. If it is legitimate then it will take us no time at all to confirm this.

“This type of offence is also extremely dangerous as the uncovered drains could cause accidents and injuries.”

Witnesses or anyone with information about the theft can contact police on 03456 043043, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
