Alongside the excitement of Sylvia’s 106th birthday, Abbeyfield Bamburgh is also celebrating scooping a prestigious award.

Sylvia is one of eight residents, aged from 61 to 106, at the home, which has just scooped the coveted Gold Star award from the Abbeyfield Group which runs homes across the UK.

It is the first time that the home, an independently-run affiliate to the group, has entered the scheme which rigorously assesses policies, procedures and residents’ quality of life.

Abbeyfield Bamburgh, which can house a maximum of 11 residents, has six staff and someone on site 24 hours a day.

Manager Paula Lingwood said: “The staff we have now are absolutely brilliant.

“Everyone has been helpful and supportive.

“It’s a home from home.

“They can have whoever they want over to see them and come and go as they please.

“We are not a nursing home, but we work to keep people in comfort until end of life.

“They don’t have the insecurity of worrying that they may have to move on to somewhere else.”
