It was a rare evening for Lesbury WI this week – it wasn’t raining, it wasn’t cold, it wasn’t windy and it was light when we arrived. How often have we been able to say this in recent months?

Susan, our president, welcomed everyone to the meeting, including a potential new member, who has recently moved to the area. I hope she doesn’t get the impression that we have wine every meeting.

Two of our number were congratulated for each taking a second prize in the recent Rington’s Challenge.

Veronica Merryweather for a handmade embroidered tea cosy and Kathleen Turnbull for a flower arrangement in a teapot.

After apologies, minutes and matters arising were quickly dealt with and our treasurer reminded everyone that there was still time to enter a second dominoes team for the area competition.

Four eager beavers quickly put themselves forward.

Members also promptly paid their balances for the summer outings to exhibitions at Bowes Museum and the Queen’s Gallery in Edinburgh.

As it was a members’ night we had opted for a dominoes competition, helped along with wine and nibbles.

Irene took charge, highlighted the rules, which clearly passed some members by, and then the contest began.

When to move round and where to move to defeated some but there was much hilarity and laughter.

The winner by one point was Carol Hume and the wooden spoon went to Ann Turnbull.

It was a hard fought battle for the birthday flowers with only a one in five chance. Clearly June was a popular month for babies. Gillian Atkinson was the victor.

Before the meeting was closed it was time to say a fond farewell to one of our number who is moving to Scotland this month. She intends to join the Scottish Women’s Rural once she is settled. We all wish you well for the future.

After a reminder that next month we have visitors and we have a pooled supper, it was time to depart – noisily.
