A SPOOF TV advert created by a Warkworth man is fast becoming a YouTube hit.

Daniel Gurney’s take on the Old Spice shower gel ad, which features a muscular bare-torsoed man, has now recorded nearly 3,500 national and international viewings – 3,000 in the past week alone.

And the spoof, renamed Urld Spice, has won critical acclaim from top comedian Bob Mortimer.

Daniel, 30, said: “I filmed myself on the beach at Warkworth using admittedly bad language in place of the official ad’s dialogue.

“In my version I’m also bare-chested but somewhat less muscular and certainly less sexy than the man in the ad and I use a cod Northumbrian accent.

“Originally I did it as a bit of fun to cheer up my partner, Anna, who was pretty ill at the time.

“I put it on YouTube some time ago and in the first few weeks there weren’t that many hits,” he said.

“However, it’s just taken off this year with loads of people looking at it.”

Among those who have had a giggle at Daniel’s ad is comedian Bob Mortimer who has been in contact to ask if he had done any more spoofs.

“I was thrilled that Bob had commented on it so positively; I’m a huge fan of his work.”

The minute-long parody has been seen by YouTube viewers in 39 different countries.

“We’ve established that as well as Europe, the clip has been picked up by people in Kurdistan, Thailand, Australia, USA, Kenya, Brazil, Singapore and Cambodia,” he said.

Daniel, who has a degree in television and radio production and is currently seeking work in the creative industries and broadcasting, is planning more spoofs which he’ll post on YouTube under his alter ego, pillowdrummer.

In the meantime, he’s planning a beer and crisps celebration for friends who’ve helped promote the clip online when the 5,000 viewings total has been reached.
