Criticism over lack of event

Criticisms have been made about the lack of commemorations in Alnwick to mark the centenary of Britain’s involvement in the First World War.

Letters have been written to the Gazette asking why there was no service at the war memorial on Monday.

And on the Gazette’s Facebook page, Becky-j Patterson queried why nothing had been organised ‘to mark the moment war was declared 100 years ago and celebrate the lives of heroes?? It’s disgusting.’

However, Mayor of Alnwick Bill Grisdale has responded to the comments.

He said: “Alnwick Town Council has established a working group which has identified a number of ways of commemorating the First World War over the next four years.

“The focus of the first year is the proposed renovation of the war memorial.

“Other activities wil be planned over the coming years in conjunction with local organisations.”
