Thieves steal lead from church roof

POLICE are appealing for information after metal thieves struck two churches in north Northumberland.

Between 1pm on Sunday, September 11, and 6pm on Wednesday, September 14, thieves got onto the roof of St James’ Church in Middle Road, Shilbottle, and removed an amount of lead flashing before making off unseen.

The metal is marked with Smart Water technology and police officers are carrying out checks at local scrap yards to try and identify where the metal has been taken.

In a separate incident, thieves also stole the metal lightning conductor from a church roof in Amble.

Between Sunday, August 14, and Tuesday, September 13, thieves took the copper conductor from the top of St Cuthbert’s Parish Church in Church Street.
