A court has been told how a woman wanted to take the secret of her abuse ‘to the grave’.
Standing trial at Newcastle Crown Court, Joseph Kinnear, 59, of East Newtown Cottages, Rothbury, is accused of 14 counts of indecent assault.
This morning, the sister of one of the alleged victims described how she heard about the abuse.
She said her sister had visited her at work in January this year.
“At first she just looked normal,” she said. “Then she went on to say she had something to tell me.
“She started to get very very emotional and upset. I thought she was going to say she had terminal cancer or that a family member had died.
“It took ages for her to tell us but she said she had to go to court to give evidence against Mr Kinnear, but she said ‘I have lied in my statement. I haven’t told them everything’.
“I said ‘did he abuse you?’ and she said ‘yes’.”
The court also heard that Kinnear had taken the witness home one day.
She told the court that he had run upstairs asking which was her bedroom. He then starting bashing one of her soft toys which upset her.
She said: “I was telling him to get off my toys. I wasn’t very happy with him, but he didn’t like my reaction. He tipped me over his knee and smacked my bottom.”
She added that Kinnear had asked her mother if he could stay over that night, but she refused.
The court heard that Kinnear also played a kissing game with her in the gym cupboard.
The trial continues this afternoon.
