A man was on the roof of an Alnwick building for around four hours yesterday evening before he came down.

He climbed out onto the roof of the four-storey former home of Alnwick Brewery and maltings in the town centre and for several hours, he sat on the apex of the roof of the building.

Today, a police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to the Malthouse in Lagny Street, Alnwick, following reports that a man was on the roof at 5.43pm yesterday.

“Officers attended and spoke to the man. He came down off the roof at 9.35pm.

“A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.”

A crowd of onlookers gathered in the Morrisons car park opposite to watch events unfold earlier on but largely dispersed as daylight faded.
