Three vehicles were involved in a collision on the A1 in north Northumberland this evening.

The incident, on the southbound carriageway near the Hampeth and Newton on the Moor junctions, took place between 8.30pm and 9pm.

It closed the A1 southbound for a time, while police directed traffic on the northbound side.

At 10pm, a police spokeswoman said that the vehicles had been removed and the road reopened. There was no indications that there had been any serious injuries, although an eyewitness counted several emergency vehicles, including four ambulances, three fire engines and five police cars on the scene.
